Water for Elephants by Sarah Gruen
Average: B Crapfactor: 20%

Most of the group thought it was a good read but not "literature".

Here's an interview with the author. You also might find this take on "Old Jacob" by a writer at Healthcentral.com informative.

Thanks to The Green Mile and Water for Elephants I don't think of spinach when I see Popeye. Instead, I think of raunchy comics. Ah, my innocence is gone!

At a few of the last meetings, there's been questions of why J. D. Salinger's Catcher in the Rye is an assigned book - why is it a classic. For those who wonder I would recommend reading a few of the essays in The Book that Changed My Life: 71 Remarkable Writers Celebrate the Books that Matter Most to Them edited by Rozanne J. Coady and Joy Johannessen. Three or four (or maybe more) of the authors chose Catcher as their book. I can't tell you if I agree with them or not because I've never read the book. I hope this helps.

Oh, and for those who haven't read/finished the next book I had meant to recommend that we mostly just read the story itself and leave all the essays at the end as optional - I apologize to anyone who finished the essays and didn't enjoy them - Erin has already told me that she won't read them (she already did and said it was hard to get through them).

Have a wonderful day!
